I created this series for the Milwaukee Artists Resource Network (MARN) Mentor Program. This program pairs emerging artists and mentors for a period of 9 months. Mentors and proteges exhibit their work at the end of the program.
I'd like to thank my mentor Richard Taylor-- metal sculptor, sailor, saxophone player, always calm and creative. Check out his work at www.taylorsculpt.com
15 chapters in the story of form
I make a functional ceramic vessel. The vessel is a singular and static form that encloses space within it. Its meaning is determined by its geometry, use, and its social role as a container.
...
I cut open the vessel with one or more incisions. This process liberates the vessel from its bound form.
...
I then reorganize the dismantled piece(s) by methods such as folding, shifting, stacking, assembling, overlapping, adding, subtracting, twisting, rotating and inserting. Through this process of fragmenting and reorganizing, the original homogenous object is transformed into a multi-faceted, composite form. Static space becomes dynamic, and the emphasis shifts from the functional use of the vessel to the interactive intricacies of geometry, space, and surface.
...
The purpose of this project is to challenge the socially constructed ways in which we understand the vessel. Each of the fifteen reformulations presented here are multiple readings of the same vessel. Each piece has its separate story and can be viewed in isolation; yet they all relate to each other and to the larger whole in order to produce interconnected narratives and multiple interpretations.
