New work- Clay Scribbles

Clay scribbles

I make a functional, wheel-thrown ceramic vessel. The vessel is a singular and static form that encloses space within it. Its meaning is determined by its geometry, use, and its socially constructed role as a container. My work challenges and deconstructs these ways in which we understand a vessel.

I cut the vessel into multiple parts, then reorganize the dismantled pieces by folding, shifting, stacking, overlapping, twisting, inserting. The vessel is liberated from its bound form.

Through this process of fragmenting and reorganizing, the original homogenous vessel is transformed into a multi-faceted, composite form. Contained space becomes dynamic, and the emphasis shifts from the functional use of the vessel to the interactive intricacies of geometry, space, and surface.

The reconstructed fragments can be configured in many different ways. They are building blocks that create incessant narratives of space and containment, overlaps and relations, boundaries and distinctions. We can read each story in isolation or trace the relations between them to produce interconnected narratives.
